Privacy and data handling

Single purpose

FreeScribe creates local transcripts from accessible captions on Google Meet, Microsoft Teams, and Zoom, plus accessible Google Meet chat. It then lets the user review and export those transcripts or send them to an HTTPS webhook the user explicitly connects.

Consent and collection

FreeScribe does not capture meeting content until the user reviews the in-product disclosure and affirmatively allows capture. After consent, the extension can process:

• accessible caption text and speaker names from Google Meet, Microsoft Teams, and Zoom, plus accessible Google Meet chat messages;
• meeting title, start and end times, and transcript metadata;
• extension preferences, saved meetings, and delivery history; and
• an HTTPS webhook URL supplied by the user.

FreeScribe does not capture audio or video, inspect unrelated browsing history, or use meeting data for advertising, analytics, profiling, or model training.

Local storage and encryption

Meeting history and sensitive connector configuration are stored in an AES-256-GCM encrypted vault in chrome.storage.local. The current release uses a passwordless vault that unlocks automatically inside the same Chrome profile. User-managed passphrase protection is disabled in this release.

This encryption protects stored records from casual plaintext inspection, but it does not protect against a person or process that already controls the unlocked device or Chrome profile. FreeScribe does not operate a backend and its developers cannot access the local vault.

Exports and webhooks

TXT, Markdown, and JSON exports are unencrypted local files created through the browser download flow. Users are responsible for protecting exported files.

Webhooks are optional. FreeScribe accepts HTTPS endpoints only, requests access only to the connected origin, and sends a transcript only after an explicit user action or after the user enables automatic delivery. The endpoint operator is responsible for data after delivery.

Users may export or send transcripts to an AI service or another external tool of their choice. FreeScribe has no built-in AI connection and does not send meeting data to an AI service automatically. The chosen destination is responsible for data after the user provides it.

FreeScribe does not sell data, share it with advertisers or data brokers, or permit its developers or other humans to read meeting content.

Retention and deletion

Users control local retention settings and can delete individual meetings or clear eligible history from the meetings page. Uninstalling the extension also removes extension-managed local data according to Chrome's storage behavior. Deleting a local meeting does not delete copies already exported or sent to a webhook.

• Optional https://*/*: requested only for the specific HTTPS webhook origin the user connects.
